IqubEthiopian rotating savings association โ€” A community-based savings pool where members contribute regularly and take turns receiving the pooled sum. Informal financial mechanism.
IddirEthiopian burial/funeral insurance association โ€” Community-based mutual aid society. Provides social safety net but not formal financial services.
MurabahaCost-plus financing (Islamic finance) โ€” The bank buys an item and sells it to the borrower at a markup. Used by Sharia-compliant lenders like Ansar (ZamZam Bank).
Collateral-Free LendingUncollateralized loans โ€” Loans issued without physical collateral (property, vehicles). Instead, credit scoring based on alternative data. Michu pioneered this in Ethiopia.
Blended FinanceDevelopment finance + commercial capital โ€” Using concessional (below-market) capital from development institutions to de-risk commercial lending to underserved segments.
SARSuspicious Activity Report โ€” Report filed with FIC when a transaction is suspected to involve money laundering, fraud, or terrorism financing. Must be filed within 3 business days.

SACCOSavings and Credit Cooperative โ€” Member-owned financial cooperative. 50+ members minimum. Loans to members only. 23,659 primary cooperatives, 6.9M total members in Ethiopia.
PIIPayment Instrument Issuer โ€” Licensed non-bank entity that can issue digital wallets, e-money, and offer micro-savings/micro-loans. Minimum capital: ETB 50M. Examples: Kacha, AfroPay, LakiPay.
DFSDigital Financial Services โ€” Financial services delivered through digital channels (mobile money, apps, USSD). Encompasses payments, lending, savings, and insurance.
P2P LendingPeer-to-Peer Lending โ€” Direct lending between individuals facilitated by a digital platform. Not yet formally regulated in Ethiopia. Ethiopian P2P market: $245.8M (2025).
